Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of 1-on-1 tutoring versus a group class or self-paced learning?

We’ve realized the three reasons why 1-on-1 tutoring helps students improve exponentially faster.

1-on-1 tutoring…

  • Offers a 100% customized learning experience that adapts to each student's strengths and weaknesses.
  • Ensures active participation and accountability, keeping students engaged and focused throughout their entire learning journey.
  • Fosters a strong tutor-student relationship, providing motivation and encouragement. Celebrating small victories boosts confidence and drives students toward their scoring goals.

How does our pricing compare to our competitors?

Most 1-on-1 tutoring programs cost $150-200 per hour. At around $60 per hour, we’re extremely affordable in comparison. Our mission is to expand access to higher education for students of all backgrounds and circumstances.

When is the best time to get started with SAT/ACT tutoring?

We highly recommend that students begin working with a 1:1 tutor during their sophomore year or earlier. Students only need to submit their highest scores to universities, so we recommend that students take their first exam during the second semester of their sophomore year.

Junior year is often the busiest time for academics and extracurriculars, so our goal is for students to complete their testing by the end of their first semester of junior year. This way, they can eliminate the stress of standardized testing early and focus on grades, extracurriculars, and enjoying their high school experience. The sooner you start, the sooner you finish.

What makes Amikka’s tutors and advisors special?

All Amikka tutors scored in the top 1% on the SAT/ACT and attended highly selective universities. Most are undergraduate students or recent college graduates, allowing them to relate to and connect with high school students on a personal level. Having taken the exam within the last 10 years, our tutors are fully up to date on the latest test-taking strategies and well-versed in the new digital format.

Beyond their expertise, they are friendly, motivating, engaging, and excellent communicators—dedicated to helping students succeed. The name “Amikka” is inspired by the Spanish word “amiga,” meaning friend—a reflection of our commitment to making learning a supportive and positive experience.

What are Amikka’s scoring statistics?

On average, our students improve by 200+ points on the SAT and 4+ points on the ACT with 40 or 50 hours of 1:1 tutoring.

What’s our approach for improving a student’s score?

We understand that tutoring is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Our SAT/ACT program is built on the three key pillars of standardized testing: time management, content, and strategy. At the start of the course, students take a diagnostic test, allowing us to analyze their strengths and weaknesses and create a personalized study plan tailored for maximum improvement.

Is the tutoring online or in person?

To provide maximum flexibility for our students, we utilize fully online tutoring via Zoom. This allows students to learn from the comfort of their preferred setting while giving us access to the highest-quality tutors nationwide rather than being limited to a single local community.

Each session features live, interactive video instruction with a digital whiteboard, ensuring a dynamic and engaging learning experience as tutors walk through exam content and strategies.

What’s our score improvement guarantee?

We provide families with peace of mind by making our courses risk-free. Students are guaranteed the following results after tutoring with us for 40-50 hours. If these results aren’t achieved, students can receive up to 20 hours of free SAT tutoring held in a small group setting or 6 hours of free ACT 1:1 tutoring.

  • Score a 1500 on the SAT or improve by 200+ points
  • Score a 34 on the ACT or improve by 4+ points

How often would we have sessions?

We recommend that students begin by meeting with their tutor one to three times per week for 90-minute sessions. However, this schedule is flexible and can be adjusted based on the student's timeline, learning pace, and goals. To accommodate busy schedules, we offer sessions on both weekdays and weekends, with flexible availability to ensure students get the support they need.

How do we match students with the right tutor?

Our tutor-matching process is a top priority. When students sign up, we use their responses from a short questionnaire to match them with a tutor who best fits their schedule, learning style, and academic needs. This ensures a personalized and effective learning experience from day one.

What happens if it’s not the right fit with our tutor?

For your peace of mind, we’re committed to providing a flexible and risk-free experience for getting started with our program. With no long-term contracts, you have the freedom to switch instructors at any time to find the perfect match.

What practice exams and homework are assigned?

Our students receive customized homework assignments with targeted practice problems and sections to review later with their tutor. Additionally, we administer practice exams every few weeks, helping students build familiarity with different question types and practice under realistic test-day conditions.

We typically recommend 45 minutes of practice between each session and a full-length practice exam for every 10 hours of tutoring to reinforce learning and track progress effectively. This cadence can be adjusted as needed.
