The Bright Futures Scholarship is one of the most valuable opportunities available to Florida high school students, covering up to 100% of tuition at Florida public universities. Understanding the 2026 requirements is essential for planning your SAT prep and academic timeline. Here is everything you need to know about qualifying for Bright Futures this year.

Bright Futures Award Levels

Bright Futures has two main scholarship tiers for incoming freshmen. The Florida Academic Scholars (FAS) award is the top tier and covers 100% of tuition and applicable fees at Florida public universities, plus a $300 per semester stipend for books. The Florida Medallion Scholars (FMS) award covers 75% of tuition and applicable fees. Both awards require specific SAT scores, GPAs, and community service hours.

SAT Score Requirements

For the Florida Academic Scholars award, you need a minimum SAT score of 1330. For the Florida Medallion Scholars award, the minimum is 1210. These scores use your best section scores across all SAT test dates, which functions similarly to superscoring. This means you can take the SAT multiple times and combine your highest Math and highest EBRW scores to meet the threshold.

For context, a 1330 SAT score is approximately the 89th percentile, while a 1210 is approximately the 77th percentile. If you are currently below these targets, check out our guide on what is a good SAT score to understand where you stand and how much improvement you need.

ACT Score Alternatives

You can also qualify for Bright Futures using ACT scores instead of SAT scores. The FAS award requires a 30 ACT composite, while the FMS award requires a 25 ACT composite. Like SAT scores, Bright Futures uses your best section scores across multiple ACT test dates. If you are unsure which test to take, our SAT vs ACT comparison can help you decide. And if you already have ACT scores, know that ACT scores are valid for 13 years.

GPA Requirements

The FAS award requires a weighted GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale using the Bright Futures calculation, which is based on 16 core academic credits. The FMS award requires a weighted GPA of 3.0. These are calculated using a specific formula that weights AP and honors courses. Your school counselor can help you calculate your Bright Futures GPA, which may differ from the GPA on your transcript.

Community Service Hours

The FAS award requires 100 hours of community service. The FMS award requires 75 hours. These hours must be completed by high school graduation and documented through your school. Start logging service hours early because accumulating 100 hours in your senior year is stressful and difficult.

How Bright Futures Saves You Money

At current tuition rates, the FAS award saves approximately $6,400 per year at a Florida public university, totaling around $25,600 over four years. The FMS award saves approximately $4,800 per year, or $19,200 over four years. When you factor in the per-semester stipend for FAS recipients, the total value exceeds $27,000.

This makes SAT preparation one of the highest-return investments a Florida student can make. The cost of the SAT is $68. A tutoring investment of even a few hundred dollars that helps you cross the Bright Futures threshold pays for itself many times over.

Planning Your Path to Bright Futures

Start with a diagnostic SAT practice test to see where you stand relative to the 1210 or 1330 target. Then build a study plan tailored to how much improvement you need and how much time you have. For students who need 100-200 points of improvement, a focused 2-month preparation plan is typically sufficient.

Christopher Hernandez, the founder of Amikka Learning, couldn't afford expensive SAT tutoring so he spent hundreds of hours studying on his own.

After improving over 400 points and attending an Ivy League school he realized how unfair the playing field was with tutoring: no matter how smart you were, if you couldn't afford tutoring you were stuck.
His dream was to change this.

He began tutoring for the SAT and quickly realized that he was a gifted tutor. His students were loving his program and improving very fast.

Fast forward 8 years, Amikka is a leader in the education industry and has helped thousands of students get into their dream schools.
