The Bright Futures scholarship is Florida's premier merit-based scholarship program, rewarding high-achieving high school students with tuition coverage at Florida public colleges and universities. It is the single most impactful financial aid program for Florida students, and your SAT score is one of the primary qualifying criteria.
There are two main award levels: the Florida Academic Scholars (FAS) Award, which covers 100% of tuition, and the Florida Medallion Scholars (FMS) Award, which covers 75% of tuition. Both have specific SAT score requirements that you need to meet.
To qualify for the FAS Award, you need a minimum SAT score of 1330 (combined Math and Reading/Writing). You also need a weighted GPA of 3.5 or higher, 100 hours of community service, and completion of specific high school course requirements. The SAT score is often the most challenging component for students to hit.
A 1330 falls in the range of a strong 1300 SAT score to a 1400 SAT score. This score places you around the 90th percentile nationally and makes you competitive not just for Bright Futures but for direct admission to UF. See the SAT score for UF FSU UCF guide for how these thresholds overlap.
The FMS Award requires a minimum SAT score of 1210, along with a weighted GPA of 3.0 or higher, 75 hours of community service, and completion of required courses. A 1200 SAT score gets you within 10 points — making that small gap one of the highest-value score improvements you can make.
First, determine which award you are targeting based on your GPA and how much community service you can complete. Then work backward to build a SAT study plan calibrated to your target score. If you are currently scoring around 1100 and need 1210, plan for 8 to 12 weeks of focused prep. If you need to reach 1330 from 1200, plan for 12 to 16 weeks.
