How the SAT Is Scored

The SAT is scored on a scale from 400 to 1600. Each of the two sections, Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, is scored from 200 to 800. Your total score is the sum of both sections. The national average sits around 1050, which means scoring above that puts you ahead of more than half of all test-takers.

What Each Score Range Means

A score of 1500 to 1600 puts you in the 98th percentile and above, which is competitive for Ivy League schools and Stanford. A 1400 to 1490 lands you in the 94th to 97th percentile, which is strong for top 20 schools and UF. A 1300 to 1390 is the 86th to 93rd percentile, competitive for most selective state schools. A 1200 to 1290 is the 74th to 85th percentile, good for many state universities and enough to qualify for Bright Futures Medallion Scholars. Below 1200 is still above average but limits options at selective schools. For the full percentile breakdown, see our SAT score percentiles chart.

What Is a Good SAT Score?

A “good” score depends entirely on your goals. For Florida students the Bright Futures Scholarship creates important thresholds. A 1210 qualifies for 75% tuition coverage and a 1330 qualifies for 100%. These thresholds turn specific SAT scores into real dollar amounts. How to Move Up the Range

Whatever your current score, a structured SAT study plan can help you move up. Most students improve 100 to 200 points with 6 to 8 weeks of focused preparation. Our SAT tutors at Amikka Learning can create a personalized strategy based on your specific section scores to help you reach the next tier.

Christopher Hernandez, the founder of Amikka Learning, couldn't afford expensive SAT tutoring so he spent hundreds of hours studying on his own.

After improving over 400 points and attending an Ivy League school he realized how unfair the playing field was with tutoring: no matter how smart you were, if you couldn't afford tutoring you were stuck.
His dream was to change this.

He began tutoring for the SAT and quickly realized that he was a gifted tutor. His students were loving his program and improving very fast.

Fast forward 8 years, Amikka is a leader in the education industry and has helped thousands of students get into their dream schools.
