The majority of top colleges in the United States superscore the SAT, meaning they consider your highest section scores across multiple test dates. This is one of the most student-friendly admissions policies available, and understanding how to leverage it can make a significant difference in your applications.

How SAT Superscoring Works

When a college superscores, they take your highest Math score and your highest Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score, even if they come from different test dates, and combine them into a new composite score. For example, if you scored 650 Math and 700 EBRW in October, then 720 Math and 680 EBRW in December, your superscore would be 720 + 700 = 1420, which is higher than either individual sitting.

This means every time you take the SAT, you have a chance to improve your superscore even if one section dips. Understanding how the SAT is scored helps you set realistic improvement targets for each section.

Top Colleges That Superscore the SAT

All eight Ivy League schools superscore: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Penn, Dartmouth, Brown, and Cornell. Check our guide on Harvard's superscoring policy for details on Ivy League policies specifically.

Other top universities that superscore include Stanford, MIT, Duke, Northwestern, the University of Chicago, Rice, Vanderbilt, and Georgia Tech. Most state flagship universities also superscore, including UF, FSU, and UCF in the Florida system.

NYU superscores, as do most schools in the top 100. The vast majority of colleges that accept the SAT will superscore it.

Notable Schools That Do NOT Superscore

Georgetown University is the most prominent school that does not superscore the SAT. Georgetown considers only your highest single-sitting composite score. A small number of other schools take a similar approach. Always verify each school's policy on their admissions website before planning your testing strategy.

How to Maximize Your Superscore

Take the SAT at least twice, and potentially three times. Plan to focus your preparation between test dates on whichever section has more room for improvement. If your Math is stronger, spend the weeks before your next test focused exclusively on Reading and Writing skills. Check how many times you can take the SAT for details on testing limits.

Plan your test dates strategically using the 2026 SAT test date schedule. Give yourself at least 6 to 8 weeks between attempts to allow for meaningful preparation and improvement.

Superscoring and the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship

The Bright Futures scholarship program in Florida also uses your highest section scores across test dates, which functions similarly to superscoring. This means you can take the SAT multiple times and use your best Math and EBRW scores to qualify for the scholarship. Check the 2026 Bright Futures requirements for the specific score thresholds you need to hit.

Does Superscoring Give You an Unfair Advantage?

No. Colleges adopt superscoring because they want to see your best work. Admissions officers understand that test performance can vary from day to day due to factors like illness, stress, or simply having a bad morning. Superscoring accounts for this reality and ensures that your application reflects your highest demonstrated ability.
